The 45th Ordinary Meeting of the South American Commission for the Fight Against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (COSALFA) will be held in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, 19-20 April 2018.
In 2017, important steps towards the eradication were taken with the submission of dossiers to OIE for the recognition of new territories as free of foot-and-mouth disease with or without vaccination. There was also an introduction of the disease in a free country, which interrupted a long period of absence of outbreaks that were quickly controlled by the affected country, leaving important lessons for the Region. Likewise, national strategies have been established and regional tools and procedures have been approved to prepare the countries for the last phase of Hemispheric Program for the Eradication of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (PHEFA).
Therefore, COSALFA 45, in compliance with its mandate, will review the current situation in accordance with the PHEFA Action Plan 2011-2020 and the challenges of its last phase, and implement resolutions that strengthen the health management of free countries and prepare them for the transition of health status, along with addressing and defining actions that allow effective progress in those territories not yet free of the disease.
Prior to COSALFA 45 meeting, on 16-17 April 2018, at the same venue, will be held the International Seminar "2020 on the Horizon: Challenges for the PHEFA". During this Seminar, we will offer the opportunity to present a technical work related to the subject, in poster display, according to the rules specified on the Criteria for entering papers.
COSALFA is formed by 26 representatives of 13 countries of the American Continent, namely, one representative of the public sector, the Official Veterinary Service Director, and one of the private sector, representing the highest national association of livestock producers. The 13 countries of the American Continent are Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Venezuela, and Uruguay.
COSALFA is promoted by the Pan-American Foot-and-Mouth Disease Center (PANAFTOSA) of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and for this edition will receive support from the Government of Bolívia, represented by the Ministry of Rural Development and Land (MDRyT), through its National Service for Animal and Plant Health and Food Safety (SENASAG).
