Welcome to the COSALFA 40
l Panama City l Panama l . The 40th Ordinary Meeting of the South American Commission for the Fight Against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (COSALFA) will be held April 18-19, 2013 at the Sheraton Panama Hotel & Convention Center in Panama City, Panama. For the first time COSALFA is done outside of South America, where the host country, Panama, joined the Commission as a member the past year. In this opportunity, according to its mandate, COSALFA will evaluate the regional FMD situation and the action commitments for the execution of the Action Plan 2011-2020 of the Hemispheric Program for the Eradication of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (PHEFA) in each country and in the region, with the proposal of strengthening the fight against the disease in the American context. The year 2013 brings great opportunities as well as great challenges in view mainly to the fact that there has been no detection of foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks in the Americas since January 2012, that is, for more than a year. COSALFA 40’s objective is to have all the countries represented by their highest authorities in animal health review and define guidelines in respect of the opportunities and challenges facing the region to maintain and expand the success it has achieved in relation to foot-and-mouth disease. Prior to COSALFA 40, the International Seminar: “PHEFA’s Follow-up: Prevention in Foot-and-Mouth Disease Free Zones” will be held April 15-16 at the same venue. For this edition of the seminar we are offering the opportunity for the presentation of papers related to the subject in a poster session, according to the rules for submitting papers. COSALFA 40 is promoted by the Pan-American Foot-and-Mouth Disease Center (PANAFTOSA) of the Pan-American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), with the support of the Government of the Republic of Panama through its Ministry of Agricultural and Livestock Development (MIDA). . .
